Victoria von Salmuth, a PhD student at the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI) with an MD from the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, has been awarded the Maastricht University One Young World Scholarship 2018. A jury comprising representatives from different faculties, a student organisation and a local non-profit organisation, selected her in recognition of her outstanding record on Sustainable Development Goals in Maastricht and abroad.
Von Salmuth currently works as a researcher in Maastricht and Tanzania; her project focuses on malnutrition in pregnant women and children in rural Tanzania. She developed an interest in global health early on in her medical studies. In addition to internships in tropical medicine and gynaecology in South America, India and Tanzania, she also joined several organisations addressing the issue of inequality in access to health care. From 2015 to 2017, she served as a board member of the Maastricht chapter of the international student organisation Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) and recently co-founded the Dutch Working Group of InciSion, International Surgical Student Network. Following her clinical internship in rural Tanzania in 2015, she founded the NGO "Shirati Food Program" for which she received the Maastricht University Student Award 2017. She aspires to a career in the field of public health care as well as gynaecology.
As recipient of the scholarship, von Salmuth will attend the One Young World Summit in The Hague on 17-20 October 2018. One Young World is the preeminent global forum for young leaders. The annual summit brings together the brightest young change-makers from around the world, to make lasting connections and develop solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. They are joined by One Young World Counsellors – world leaders who inspire and support the delegates. One Young World Counsellors of past summits include Kofi Annan, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Mary Robinson, Emma Watson, John Kerry, Thuli Madonsela and Richard Branson.
As a One Young World delegate, von Salmuth will become a part of the One Young World Ambassador community that today includes more than 9,000 young leaders in business, NGOs, government, and academia. The jury congratulates her, wishes her all the best in her future endeavours, and hopes that this will serve to further Victoria’s project and advocacy work.
