Populism, Nationalism and Human Rights

We have recently witnessed a new wave of success of nationalist and populist politics in Europe and beyond. The conference will debate how these developments challenge the universal and European human rights standards, and how human rights law could be used as a tool to counter the recent wave of nationalism and populism.

DAY 1:

  • 09.00: Welcome address by Prof Jan Smits, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Maastricht University
  • 09.15-10.15: Keynote Lecture 1 by Prof Theo van Boven, Maastricht University: Populism and Universal Human Rights
  • 10.30-12.00: Plenary panel 1 (see printable version of program)
  • 12.00-13.00: Lunch
  • 13.00-14.30: Plenary panel 2 (see printable version of program)
  • 14.45-16.30: Parallell panels 3 & 4 (see printable version of program)
  • 16.45-17.45: Keynote Lecture 2 by Prof Jean d'Aspremont, Sciences Po Paris & University of Manchester: International (Human Rights) Law as a Belief System
  • 19.30: Conference dinner

DAY 2:

  • 11.00-12.00: Keynote Lecture 3 by Prof. Başak Çalı, Hertie School of Governance Berlin: The Specter of Populism on Human Rights Law: the cases of UK and Turkey
  • 12.00-13.00: Lunch

  • 15.00-16.00: Roundtable followed by final remarks
  • 16.00: Closing                 

 Conference fee:

  • Participant: € 75 for 1 day (on 11 January), € 115 for 2 days (including dinner and lunch) 
  • UM employee: no fee (including lunch, excluding dinner)
