Firm-level innovation capabilities are typically examined with the use of survey methods or patent indicators. Both methods have important limitations. It is well known that patenting activities are low in most parts of the Global South as compared to OECD countries, and hence they are of limited value in innovation studies concerned with the global south. Furthermore, patents work as indicators of science and technology innovation (STI) but do not capture dynamics in sectors where doing, using and interacting (DUI) is the dominant mode of learning and innovation (Jensen et al., 2007). Innovation surveys can be devised for data collection, but they are highly costly. Studies have identified effective Indicators on firm … in the European Union (Ashouri et al., 2022). This study will develop web-scraping methods to analyse firm-level innovation capabilities in Emerging Economies such as China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey and South Africa (upper middle-income countries). The development of this method is highly challenging, for instance due to language issues and the absence of registry data. Institutional collaboration The PhD candidate will be placed UNU-MERITs newly established Computational …
- 2022fse_csc_mathias_staudigl.pdf (170.71 kB, PDF)… Prof. Dr. Ralf Peters (promoter), Dr. Joel Karel, Dr. Pietro Bonizzi Proposal (250 words): Introduction: Most algorithms, be it in optimization or any other field, depend on critical parameters that need to be tuned to achieve a satisfactory degree of computational accuracy and reliability. Specific application domains of interest where this is the case are the tuning or regularization hyperparameters in deep neural networks and variable projection methods in inverse problems, and variational regularization in mathematical imaging. The optimization method in action in all these … problem, fixing the hyperparameters, and a follower optimizes a lower-level problem, usually corresponding to a data fidelity function, for a given choice of parameters dictated by the leader. To solve such a two-stage optimization problem, a common assumption is that the lower-level problem can be solved exactly for each possible parameter configuration designed by the leader. This assumption is, however, practically infeasible. Objectives: The aim of this project is to revisit optimal …

NSSI behaviors are alarmingly frequent in the general population with prevalence rates between 13% and 45%. However, the rates rise to 50% in clinical samples, where NSSI behaviors are present in a broad range of different disorders, including personality disorders, mood disorders, and eating disorders. The dominant explanatory models for the etiology of NSSI postulate that the main function of self-injury is … behavior in patients and non-clinical populations and for facilities in which people experience lack of stimulation for prolonged periods (i.e. hospitals, clinics, prisons). - abstract_van_der_velden.pdf (74.53 kB, PDF)… Tera di famia: collectively owned family land and private law in the Dutch Caribbean The ‘Tera di famia’ is a cultural-institutional form of land tenure common to citizens of Afro- Caribbean descent, known in the whole Caribbean and as such not limited to the islands of Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire. Groups of siblings with their spouses lived near to each other on family land, often a donation dating back to the moment of manumission in the first half of the 19th century. It is a system of unrestricted cognatic descent whereby land ownership is inherited by all descendants of the original owner as a group. The land is not partitioned when someone dies by heirs, but rather held in common with all rightful heirs as a shared claim to the overall parcel. Rightful heirs, as the family sees them, are not always identical to those identified as owner by the authorities. Co-owners of family land are entitled to use a portion of the …
