In 1944, during the Second World War, Carla Josephus Jitta (1931) was transported from the Dutch transit camp Westerbork to the ghetto Theresienstadt (Czechoslovakia), from where many transports went to the death camps. Carla Jitta managed to avoid these transportations through a lot of lucky circumstances. Tonight she will tell how she managed to survive and how she was liberated in a spectacular way, months before the war ended.

Oleg Lysenko (1974, Ukraine) studied in the Ukraine, Enschede and Rotterdam. Oleg has played with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and recently performed with writer and visual artist Armando, sculptor and draftsman Koenraad Tinel and writers Stefan Brijs and Stefan Hertmans. Tonight he presents Victor Vlasov: "Five faces on the land of the Gulag archipelago", which is also the title of his CD released in 2012. Watch a video of his performance here.

After the lecture, there will be a walk past several houses where stumbling stones have been laid. The stumbling stones (Stolpersteine) project is a European commemorative project by the German artist Gunter Demnig. The idea is to lay a stone in the pavement in front of every house where someone was deported, with the person’s name, date of birth and the date on which he/she was killed. The walk will stop at some of the houses to reflect and remember the deported person/people who lived there. The walk will start the St. Janskerk at approximately 10 pm.
