Abortion at Sea
According to TIME Magazine abortion doctor and activist Rebecca Gomperts is one of the 100 most influential people of 2020. In a world where the position of women and female fertility is once again under pressure, Gomperts uses her initiatives Women on Waves and Women on Web to cross borders, literally. Her ship, carrying a mobile abortion clinic, sails the seven seas and docks in international waters just off the coasts of countries that haven’t legalized abortion. Women come onboard the ship, where Dutch law applies, so they can undergo a safe, legal, and professional abortion procedure. This practice has led to both outrage and admiration with many.
Bureau Europa and Studium Generale are inviting Doctor Rebecca Gomperts to speak in light of the exhibition Love in a Mist – the Architecture of Fertility, which is open to visitors up until 15 August at Bureau Europa.
