All You See

What if you suddenly end up in a world where you are no longer seen, but stared at? If no one knows who you are, are you still yourself? How do you build up a life when you are constantly subjected to the projections of others? All You See shows the alienation this evokes in four protagonists who are new to the Netherlands.

The experience of alienation is all too familiar to director Niki Padidar, who left Iran at the age of 7. In All You See, she enters into painful and humorous conversation with three other immigrants. Hanna from Ukraine, who watches cartoons to learn to blend in and not constantly seem like a tourist. Sophia, who just came over from the UK. And Khadija from Somalia, who has been a “newcomer” for 27 years.

Afterwards, we will discuss the film in relation to current events: how do we tend to view Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands, for example? And how does that differ from the way we look at Iranians or Afghans and how we tend to treat them? What shapes our assumptions of people, and what can we do about it?

In cooperation with Lumiere Cinema.
