Art and Democracy

For over twelve years, artist Jonas Staal has been realising projects on the relationship between art, democracy and politics. He argues that democracy is not free from propaganda. It could even be said that the history of modern propaganda and modern democracy run parallel to one another. Staal analyses prison designs of the extreme right, develops parliaments for stateless and blacklisted organisations, and has recently started an artistic campaign to develop radical alternatives to the European crisis. In this lecture, Staal will analyse the failures of democracy and show his attempts to imagine alternatives. The task of art is “to make a world.”
