Opera Zuid: L'Étoile
Every year, King Ouf I looks forward to the birthday present he thought up himself: the execution of a random subject. This year, the choice falls on the brazen pedlar Lazuli. However, the court astrologer Siroco warns the king that Ouf's star is closely linked to Lazuli's. So if he dies, Ouf dies too. But of course, his majesty will not let that happen, and Lazuli's life is closely guarded. He is extremely pampered and even gets to marry the princess in the end!
Is L'Étoile a fairy tale? A political parody? Existential satire? It is all of them at once. In any case, it holds up a distorting mirror to us, astutely exposing the arbitrariness of power, the folly of fate and the transience of existence.
Performed in French with Dutch and English surtitles. There will be an introduction in English at 18:30.
In cooperation with Theater aan het Vrijthof
