The 2016 Presidential Election in the United States
Talking about the 2016 presidential election campaigns, Secretary of State John Kerry said: "It's an embarrassment to our country." Kerry found that many world leaders, including allies, are concerned about the controversial statements of Trump about what should happen to Muslims, Mexicans, China, to women who have had an abortion, Europeans and NATO. Candidates, who aim for more extreme positions, seem to be popular. Candidates who have been in government, like Hillary Clinton, cannot necessarily turn that experience into political advantage. On the eve of the election, Janssens discusses what the presidential elections say about the state of American politics and society, as well as the possible consequences for the Netherlands and Europe.
