Mariinka

Set in the town of Mariinka in Eastern Ukraine, this film traces several young Ukrainians whose lives have been shaped by more than ten years of conflict in the Donbas. Amidst the war, a promising boxing talent turns military paramedic. A girl is smuggling goods across the front line. Two brothers fight on opposite sides, while their younger brother lives in the US. 

Mariinka begins long before the world watched the full-scale Russian invasion, after which the town was completely destroyed. A story about belonging, national loyalty and the fault lines where political conflicts can trump even the bonds of blood.

The film will be introduced by Giselle Bosse, Professor in EU External Democracy Support at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She also holds the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Foreign Policy and International Relations and is a Fellow at the European Democracy Hub in Brussels.
