Annemarie Zeijl - Rozema (A.E.)

Annemarie van Zeijl-Rozema graduated as a Master of Science from Wageningen University, The Netherlands, in 1995. She studied Tropical Land Use and specialised in Management of Natural Resources. In 2011 she obtained at ICIS-Maastricht University her PhD on “Regional sustainable development: Barriers in practice”.

Her main challenge is to connect science to practice and find ways for how to “do” sustainable development. A leading question is “How can science help to deal with sustainability problems that are inherently unstructured problems with no clear solution?”. She uses her knowledge about integrated assessment, joint knowledge production, co-creation, governance, sustainability indicators, and regional development to make a difference. Her interest lies both in developed and developing countries.

1995: Master of Science from Wageningen University, The Netherlands, in Tropical Land Use, specialisation Management of Natural Resources.

1995-1997: worked in the field of land use changes related to global change, and acted as a programme officer for an EU funded project on the coordination of land use data in Europe.

1997-1999: moved to Yemen to work as a programme officer for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

1999-2001: worked at FAO headquarters in Italy on policy development regarding sustainable agriculture and rural development.

2002-2004: worked free-lance for the University of Maastricht.

2004: joined the Department of International and European Law as programme manager for several projects dealing with risk management.

2005-now: works for ICIS, first as research fellow and currently as assistant professor in sustainable development.

Annemarie has been work package leader for the EU funded FP6 project INSURE on integrated monitoring of sustainable development.
Currently, she is WP leader for the Interreg funded project ACE Retrofitting where she is repsonsible for the work package focusing on the "demand" side, i.e. the house owners.
She is also WP leader for the co-creation work package in the Interreg ENLEB project on energy retrofitting at the neighbourhood level.
She has been the principal investigator on a number of other projects, see "projects".
She is also course coordinator for the course "Sustainability Science- knowledge at the interface of policy and society" and Academic skills.
She is Programme Director of the master's programme "Sustainability Science, Policy and Society

From 2016-2018 Annemarie chaired the new Board of Examiners of ICIS, MGSoG and MEBIT. Her duties consisted of establishing this new Board and merging the different working styles of the previously separate Boards, and safeguarding the quality of the diplomas as stated in the Dutch law on higher education (WHW).

Since September 2018 Annemarie joined the MSI management team (portfolio eucation) as well as the Programme Board of the Master in Sustainability Science, Policy and Society.

Since September 2019 Annemarie is Programme Director of the master's programme "Sustainability Science, Policy and Society".
