After a discussion round and a break, the following presenter was Prof. Dr. Christo Wilson (Northeastern University, USA), who discussed algorithm auditing in the Amazon Buy Box. … it with these infantile antics!” Although Nieuwenhuis was certainly right in claiming that any quantitative score cannot replace assessment of quality, today’s university is hard to imagine without rankings. Not only academics, also universities and faculties are regularly classified on basis of quantitative data. An important ranking is the annual The Times Higher Education World University Ranking . It not only contains a ranking of the 500 best universities in the world (Maastricht University … How to assess this ranking? Should we be happy? Next to the objections of Nieuwenhuis, we all know how it works with such rankings. Who does well, tells the world; who drops in the ranking, keeps it silent. We therefore proudly shared the news on our website and via Twitter . However, more important than the place in the ranking are the underlying data and whether we can learn anything from these. What is the methodology of THE ranking? The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators that each have their own weighting. For the subject ranking law, teaching (learning environment, reputation, staff to student ratio, doctorates awarded to staff) counts for 32,7%, research (volume, income and reputation) for 30,8%, citations for 25%, international outlook for 9% and industry income for 2,5%. The UM scores very high for international outlook (fifth place worldwide with 92,4), ranks a little below place 40 for …

A research line is the main research topic and the thread throughout (large parts of) a career. It could be law and technology in private law, globalisation in public law, human rights in criminal law, sustainability, or anything else. It usually begins with a research project, …
… a downward price spiral by de facto announcing market prices from 2013 to 2018. While reiterating that monitoring online retail prices by suppliers is, in and of itself, permitted, ACM found that the market transparency resulting from price-comparison websites, retailers’ online stores, and spider software allowed Samsung to analyse carefully the price fluctuations of its own television models and contact retailers, if necessary. Taking the Decision as a starting point, the question is how competition law should classify vertical information exchange on pricing when it is enabled or facilitated by web crawlers, price comparison sites and spider software. Does such exchange of information warrant a more flexible approach under competition law, or, as adopted by the ACM in Samsung, a stricter approach? From an economic perspective the question could be framed as: is the exchange of information between a manufacturer and resellers more likely to lead to higher prices in a situation where price comparison websites lead to price transparency, compared to a situation without price comparison websites? Assessment of restrictions in a vertical relationship, legal qualification in the Decision as by object restriction For the assessment of restrictions in a …
… Zoekresultaten 6 november 2017 door: A. Parise in Law Every endeavour is achieved as the result of teamwork, and librarians are fundamental members in our team when researching in law. Librarians provide able hands and without them effective research would be an almost impossible mission, especially in the Internet era. Above all, librarians hold the keys to the centres where knowledge is generated. The active role of librarians Librarians are acquainted with that active role they play as part of our team. They devote efforts to facilitate the teamwork capacities of patrons. First, librarians are actively involved in research projects. They left behind–already for several decades–a passive role that could hamper the creation of knowledge. Librarians have now a hands-on approach in research projects, and are often the best co-authors. Second, librarians welcomed …

Parise in Law The scientific study of law–when consisting of the drafting of a research paper–undergoes a series of stages, running a cycle that matures and evolves. Researchers can slightly move back-and-forth through these stages, yet the cycle is completed in a clockwise direction, starting from the researching stage. Researching Stage . The results presented in a research paper can help understand changes in …

… Zoekresultaten 19 maart 2019 door: B.R.N. van Grinsven in Science and Engineering I love introducing students to the world of research and seeing them light up and enjoy themselves while learning to produce publishable work. For me, the key to being a true educator is to simulate the professional world as closely as possible and give students a taste of what lies beyond their diploma. My favourite part about teaching at the MSP is the project period. During the projects, I have students participate in the research conducted by our professional research group. It sometimes astonishes me what we can accomplish in three weeks. We’ve even been able to publish a few papers with students. Seeing how motivated students can be when they see that we might get something tangible like a paper out of …
… 13 september 2019 door: P. Balboni in Law The Swedish Data Protection Authority recently launched an investigation into Umeå University’s handling of sensitive personal data, specifically data obtained from the Danish Police Authority for research purposes. The Swedish Police Authority to the Data Inspectorate has alleged that the university sent the sensitive data in its possession via unencrypted email. Data protection in research is of paramount importance in two ways. On the one side, data should be protected by research institutions (especially when research is carried out on sensitive data) – with reference to the protection of personal data. Secondly, EU legislators and supervisory authorities should really work to enable more ways to lawfully use personal …
