… 11 februari 2021 Zoekresultaten For decades, women are underrepresented in science, and in particular in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). One of the theories why there is still such a gender gap in STEM is that women don’t prefer a career in the exact sciences because of a lack of role models. So, let’s highlight some female researchers at Maastricht University who have chosen a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematic. And who knows…it might inspire young girls to choose an education that sets them up for a career in the exact sciences. Faculty of Science and Engineering International Women and Girls in science day is an annually reoccurring ‘holiday’ on 11 February that highlights the critical role women and girls play in science and technology. … 23 januari 2019 Zoekresultaten The Faculty of Science and Engineering welcomes Sir Roger Penrose, emeritus Professor of Mathematics of the University of Oxford, for a two-day visit to Maastricht. Sir Roger Penrose has done pioneering work in the domain of physics and mathematics. He won several awards for his work, among which the Wolf Prize in Physics together with Professor Stephen Hawking. However, his contribution to science spans many different disciplines and has even expanded into art, for example in the form of Penrose stairs found in the work of Dutch artist M.C. Escher. Programme Wednesday 23 January 14:00 - 16:00 Symposium ‘Physics and Mathematics @ Maastricht’ With special guest Sir Roger Penrose - hosted by Dr. Ronald Westra (DKE), A bird’s-eye view of research in the domain of physics and mathematics at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. … years to get to where we are today. But just how complicated can these familial relations get? Well: complicated enough for the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to award a KLEIN-1 grant to Dr. Steven Kelk. He will explore the mathematics behind shrinking these sometimes impossibly huge evolutionary trees. Faculty of Science and Engineering Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering Trees of life – for instance showing how animals evolved from a common ancestor – are … recent years we’ve begun to realize that there isn’t really one tree of life. Depending on where you look, and the methods you use to build the tree, you get different outcomes”, Dr. Steven Kelk says. Computer says no Make no mistake: Dr. Kelk is a mathematician rather than a biologist. Where does his fascination for evolutionary trees come from? “To understand what’s happening with two different trees, you first want to try and put a number on their dissimilarity. While there are multiple ways to … this distance, some of the more interesting distances are really challenging to compute. I’m particularly interested in cases where you currently can’t calculate the distance, because the trees are simply too big for the algorithm to handle.” The mathematical answer to this problem lies in something called kernelization . In this case, it’s about reducing the size of the evolutionary trees without losing information. You can then use the compacted trees, which pose a much smaller challenge to …

… 1 juni 2017 Zoekresultaten Dr Amrapali Zaveri, along with the co-authors, won the Best In-Use Paper for the paper entitled 'smartAPI: Towards a more intelligent network of Web APIs'. SmartAPI The smartAPI project aims to maximize the FAIRness (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) of web-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Rich metadata is essential to properly describe your API so that it becomes discoverable, connected, and reusable. We have developed a openAPI-based specification for defining the key API metadata elements and value sets. smartAPIs leverage the Open API specification v3 and JSON-LD for providing semantically annotated JSON content that can be treated as Linked Data. European Semantic Web Conference Dr. Zaveri received the award at the 14th European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) in Portoroz, Slovenia. The ESWC is a major venue for discussing the latest scientific results and technology innovations around semantic technologies. …
