European Studies Education
The educational programmes in European Studies of Maastricht University train students with a broad interest in the cultural, historical, political and socio-economic space that Europe represents today. The curricula are a unique mix of humanities and social sciences reflecting the diverse faculty coming from the disciplines of Philosophy, History, Literature & Art, Society Studies, and Political Science. The programmes aim to form critical analysts who are able to examine and steer complex contemporary European processes such as: economic and climate crises in the context of interdependency, migration flows, international security dilemmas, or the rise of populism. The culturally diverse student body forms a truly international classroom. In addition, the students are exposed to various cultural, legal, economic and political norms as materialized in various viewpoints during the problem-based discussions. This allows them to be confronted and comprehend the intricacies of creating unity while being very diverse (which is in many ways the essence of Europe).

On Exchange in Hong Kong
In year three our students can spend a semester abroad, or stay in Maastricht or elsewhere in the Netherlands to do an internship or take courses. Studying at another university (or in another programme) or undertaking an internship offers them the change of scenery and a chance to get a better insight into future master's programmes and career options. It also allows them to apply the acquired knowledge and skills, as well as to gain new insights.
Studying abroad offers the opportunity to study certain issues in more depth, in a setting that may differ from FASoS (a different country, different teaching philosophy, etc.). FASoS has agreements with more than 100 European and non-European partner universities, where students can take courses in several fields, including European Studies, political science, international relations and journalism.
One of our third year students has spent a semester in Hong Kong. Watch her vlogs to get an impression of what studying abroad may be like.
MaRBLe Excellence programme
Through the Maastricht Research Based Learning programme, MaRBLe for short, we offer talented third-year bachelor’s students the opportunity to conduct their own research project. They are guided by experienced academic staff who will help them further develop critical thinking and research skills. This helps student to prepare for a career in scientific research or research positions in business.
One of our 3rd year BA European Studies students participated in the MaRBLe programme (Course "On Expedition: travels to the unknown"). Watch her vlogs in which she shares her experiences.
