Global Policy and Governance Challenges focusses on the changing global environment and relations between Europe and the rest of the world. You will address contemporary problems like international migration and international development, and what they imply for Europe, neighbouring countries and the Global South. The specialisation is anchored in international relations and comparative politics. You will look at EU relationships with other (emerging) global players and other regional organisations. The relations between Europe and the rest of the world are studied against the backdrop of a growing interdependence between countries, but also the global power shift characterised by the rise of the BRICS. Special attention is paid to non-European perspectives on solutions to global challenges and to the institutions supporting global governance.
Global Policy and Governance Challenges is one specialisation in the Master European Studies. Discover also our other specialisations:
Originally from Ireland, Doireann finished her bachelor’s programme in Law from University College Dublin. She chose to do her master’s programme in European Studies at FASoS.
Why Doireann chose to study European Studies in Maastricht:
“I see myself working for Europol or Interpol. So, this master’s programme helps me to reach my career goals. On top of that, Maastricht is a great city to live in as a student. The city has a great atmosphere and there’s plenty of extra-curricular activities and social events that you can take part in.”

“The European aspects within my master’s programme, really complement my personal goal to work in foreign affairs or in a European institution.”

The combination of theory and practice makes learning much more effective and prepares me better for the working environment.
I’m inspired by the dynamics of the international economic systems, therefore, my goal is to work in an international environment focusing on trade policies.
I want to contribute to a European perspective on new technologies and their relation to EU politics and society.
For me, this master’s programme is an ideal steppingstone for a future career in Brussels, preferably working for the European Commission or the European Parliament.
