This is a good thing, according to ongoing research by Carla Haelermans from the School of Business and Economics (SBE) and Patrick Bijsmans from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS). “Students, including Dutch ones, perform exceptionally well in tutorial groups with a mix of nationalities. The education minister hinted … we want to know is whether there’s an optimum number of nationalities in a tutorial group,” says Haelermans, who focuses on the quantitative side. “We’re also looking beyond FASoS. The study includes 12 English-taught bachelor’s programmes across all faculties except the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, where the main language of instruction is Dutch.” Data on students’ nationalities, prior education, previous grades and more are being collected and analysed; the tutorials observed …

… on microfinance, together with one of my PhD students. In attendance at the conference was a nice mix of academics and practitioners. Our paper, presented by my PhD student, was about what has become known as ‘mission drift’: what happens when firms start to drift away from their original mission? Mission drift is especially interesting in markets where for-profit and not-for-profit firms compete, like healthcare, education … and microfinance. Why? Because in that case, mission drift can happen in two directions: from a pure for-profit start to a more mixed mission, and from a pure not-for-profit start towards the same middle. School of Business and Economics J.W.B. Bos Professor of Banking and Finance Finance, School of Business and Economics From a societal perspective, mission drift does not have to be bad. … 15 januari 2024 Zoekresultaten How can we help employees to fulfil their potential? And how can we do this in a way that is sustainable for both employees and organizations? Recently, I started a new professorship at the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at SBE to address these questions, together with various stakeholders in science, policy, and practice. In this blog, I describe why these questions are … by general practitioners. It centers on the use of a conversation instrument. It works like this: first, a patient fills out a questionnaire about the six dimensions of Positive Health. The scores on the six dimensions are displayed in a "spider web" diagram. This spider web then forms the basis for a conversation between the care provider and the patient, in which the patient's condition is discussed, looking at all six dimensions of health, as well as the relationship between these … not explicitly mentioned. Also for employees it is not always clear what the goal of working with Positive Health is, and too strong a focus on health gains can even create resistance among employees. Finally, it is not clear whether different target groups benefit in the same way from working with Positive Health. Initiatives around Positive Health and work usually focus on people who are already working, but can they also be used for people who are struggling to find work? A new co-creation …

… 19 december 2023 Zoekresultaten SBE alumnus Paul Schraven reflects on his journey after Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE). After a stint in management consulting, he co-founded SparkSupply in Berlin, connecting students to startups. Shifting away from this model, he worked remotely for a US startup, pursued an Entrepreneurship-focused Master’s, and eventually co-founded Packmatic. The company, focused on sustainability and digitization in the packaging industry, is currently in the middle of its Series A, with a team of approximately 35 … Unveiling the Transition: From SBE to Packmatic I just realized that my time at Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE) ended more than 8 years ago now – time really does fly . During my studies, I was already quite curious about startups, however, ended up in management consulting at Capgemini Invent. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me – I felt it was too hierarchical, political, and lacking direct impact. So, I moved to Berlin with Oscar and Jan (SBE classmates) to co-found our …
