… a reduction in grey matter did not impair cognitive ability. 'A reduction in grey matter may be the first sign that cognitive ability will decline in the future,' says Moonen. 'This finding highlights the importance of monitoring patients at an early stage and prescribing medication and cognitive therapy as soon as possible to minimise further deterioration. These fundamental insights into the brain processes of Parkinson's patients are essential for developing new therapies tailored specifically …

… H. Aerts, Harvard University Key words: artificial intelligence, radiomics, immunotherapy, oncology, imaging, radiology "Artificial intelligence for imaging in immunotherapy" Immunotherapy is currently given to cancer patients in advanced stages. As the disease has spread across the body, radiological CT scans remain the only tool available to examine all organs. This system is complex, time-consuming, and incompatible with the fast-pace treatment decision-making needed for advanced-stage cancer patients. This thesis proposes the use of artificial intelligence in the examination of imaging in advanced-stage patients receiving immunotherapy, making maximal use of the information contained in a CT scan. … contexts which allow for self-reflection based on individual identity with concrete future self-images promote self-regulated learning skills. “Professional identity formation,” defined as the formation of a representation of self, achieved in stages over time during which the characteristics, values, and norms of the medical profession are internalised, might play a pivotal role in fostering self-regulated learning in a teacher-centred context. … dr. C. Mihl Key words: cervical cancer, MRI, parametrial invasion, treatment response "Magnetic resonance imaging of cervical cancer: prediction of parametrial invasion and treatment response" The choice of therapy (surgery or radiation) in early-stage cervical cancer is based on the stage of the disease. In this thesis we show that a new MRI technique, diffusion-weighted MRI, is able to determine more precisely whether there is or isn’t invasion to surrounding tissue. This results in more patients receiving the correct treatment. Late-stage cervical cancer is usually treated with radiation and chemotherapy. In a minority (6-7%) of patients, there is an incomplete reaction to the radiation. In selected cases, this group can still be cured through surgery. In this thesis, imaging …

… and with this study patients with either excellent or poor prognosis can be classified better than in the past. After assessing the current occurrence of hepatitis B in Belgium, specific advice is given in order to better treat the disease at an early stage. This advice is to test migrants without any signs of disease for hepatitis B. The thesis concludes with a particular future prospect for a new HBAI20 hepatitis B vaccine for individuals who have previously not responded to a standard hepatitis B …

… delays by bringing access closer to sick children in their community. The results show that the costs of severe illness constrain access to healthcare facilities and delay immediate care. This can cause the illness to progress into more severe stages and can increase the risks of disability and death. Interventions that bring effective diagnosis and treatment closer to the patient increases and speeds up access to diagnosis and treatment, reduce illness costs and clinical episode duration. …

… of the outer layer, the cortex, of the adrenal gland: the adrenal cortex carcinoma. Adrenal cortex carcinoma is a rare form of cancer with poor prognosis. Up to 30% of patients with adrenal cortex cancer present with incurable metastatic disease, stage IV cancer. The only option to cure non-metastatic adrenal cortex carcinoma is to completely cut out the cancer surgically. However, even after successful surgery there is a very high chance that the disease will return. Drug options are limited …

… blood vessels the blood-brain barrier separates blood from brain tissue, and maintains the optimal balance for proper brain cell functioning. Blood-brain barrier leakage, measured with contrast-enhanced brain scans, can already be detected in early stage dementia. We investigated whether blood-brain barrier leakage is already present in normal, age-related decline in cognitive functions. We found that even healthy older people had more blood-brain barrier leakage than younger people. Blood-brain …
