Improved macrophage functioning is particularly beneficial for patients in the early stages of atherosclerosis as it could contribute to eradicating fats and cellular debris and thereby reduce plaque formation. However, the study indicates that an increased production of inflammatory substances could be counterproductive in the later stages of the disease because it reduces plaque stability and may increase the risk of heart attack.
