… in axial spondyloarhthritis. A matter of perspective" This research focused on axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), an inflammatory disorder that mainly involves the spine. Investigated were several outcomes of axSpA, of relevance to both the individual patient as well as society. It was observed that male patients develop more damage to their spine, while female patients experience a worse quality of life. In addition, depressive symptoms are frequently present in patients with axSpA, but … despite the availability of effective treatments, and that they regularly incur sick leave because of their disease. Sick leave due to axSpA turned out to be predictive of future sick leave, and can be considered a warning signal. Finally, it was shown that, also in the future, it remains worthwhile for society to keep investing in better diagnosis of axSpA. Click here for the full dissertation. Fac. This collaboration between intensive care, cardiology and radiology has led to three publications in leading scientific journals. Two of these provide insight into the role of the heart during an ICU stay and one publication shows what heart damage is still visible six months after leaving the ICU. … 30 maart 2016 New fundamental insights into brain processes in patients with Parkinson's disease (MUMC+ news) Zoekresultaten Patients suffering from Parkinson's disease showed no deficits in their ability to recognise emotions, while this ability was expected to be compromised. This is due to a shortage of the 'happiness hormone' dopamine. Reduced brain activity in the emotional system should disrupt the ability to identify emotions. New research from Maastricht University (UM) and the Maastricht University Medical Centre+ (MUMC+) shows that the immune system’s Natural Killer (NK) cells may be involved. … 1 september 2021 Zoekresultaten Scientists and cardiologists have known for decades that once a piece of heart muscle has died, for example due to a heart attack, it will never grow back. This is because an adult heart muscle cell is not able to divide in the way a skin cell does to repair a wound. However, a research group from Maastricht University led by Professor Leon de Windt has now shown that by tinkering with microRNAs, heart muscle cells can indeed be prompted to regenerate. The research was published earlier this month in Nature Communications .
