    Dutch research institutions and Elsevier reach framework agreement

    VSNU, NFU, NWO and Elsevier have reached a framework agreement. In the short term, this means that from January 2020 we will have access to all online journals from Elsevier and UM scholars can publish Open Access in all Elsevier journals – Full OA and Hybrid – without paying APC.

    Elsevier has expanded the number of journal titles in which researchers from Maastricht University and MUMC+ can publish open access ‘for free’ to 1650 hybrid titles. Researchers can now also publish in 250 open access journals without paying APC.

    Agreement with Elsevier extended until 2020

    In late 2018, when the ‘current’ contract with Elsevier ended, VSNU and Elsevier agreed to continue the talks on a new contract while the existing agreements were maintained. Now the current contract will be extended for an additional six months to allow more time for the negotiations.

    The third report of the ITEM/ICGI project on ‘Cross-Border Corporate Mobility in the EU’ has now been published. The report builds upon the earlier reporting on cross-border corporate activity and features a comprehensive country-by-country reporting to provide a fuller picture of cross-border company mobility in the EU.

    Micah Vandegrift lives and works in Raleigh, North Carolina. He visited Maastricht University Library as a Fulbright-Schuman innovation fellow and stayed with us for 5 months between October 2018 and February 2019. His wife and two young children accompanied him to Maastricht and beyond.

  • Childcare allowance for each PhD candidate

    It has appeared in several cases already: PhD candidates with a scholarship who do not receive childcare allowance. Recently, Minister Van Engelshoven of Education, Culture and Science answered parliamentary questions about the right to childcare allowance for PhD candidates. The answers she gives are in line with the well-known arguments of the Dutch Tax Administration. Expertise centre ITEM questions these arguments on the basis of European law.

    This year, the MAASTRO clinic in Maastricht is starting to use proton therapy - the promising new form of radiation treatment for cancer. The ‘what and why’ are no longer in question. Irradiation with protons instead of with photons can make a big difference for some types of cancer. The biggest question now revolves around the ‘how’.
