Last week, education minister Bruins published a letter to the House of Representatives outlining how he plans to address the call to protect regions like Limburg from measures aimed at reducing the number of international students. Unfortunately, many questions remain unanswered. While the minister acknowledges the unique characteristics of certain regions, he also insists that every programme, including those at UM, must pass a language test. This does little to clarify the situation.

Maastricht University (UM) students will have the opportunity to enrol in 21 minors through the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance in the 2025-2026 academic year. These 30-ECTS minors, covering a wide range of disciplines, will be offered across all 10 YUFE universities, providing a unique international learning experience.

Marij Middag (PhD Candidate) and Teresa Schuhmann (Professor of Clinical Applications of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation) from the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, have recently published their paper Alpha transcranial alternating current stimulation as add-on to neglect training: a randomised trial (also co-authored with Alexander Sack and Caroline van Heugten) in Brain Communications from Oxford Academic. The Board of Deans of Maastricht University, partly in response to discussions surrounding De Jonge Akademie’s ‘Iedereen Professor’ initiative, is emphasising PhD supervision rights for Assistant Professors. At UM, Assistant Professors can apply for the ius promovendi, granting them the right to confer a doctorate degree and act as a PhD supervisor.
