On January 26th, the UM Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences hosted the Kapuscinski Development Lecture. The lecture ‘Youth in Movement: Waithood, Migration and the Peripheries’ at FASoS was given by Professor Alcinda Honwana, Inter-Regional Adviser on social development policy at the United Nations Department of Social and Economic Affairs and visiting professor of Anthropology and International Development at the Open University in the UK

Dr Cameron Browne comes from a game-playing family: ‘My mother valued the developmental potential of games, and my grandmother was the meanest Scrabble player I’ve ever encountered’. It is therefore not a coincidence that Browne has spent a large portion of his academic life researching games and has been awarded an ERC consolidator grant of €2 million to start up a five-year research project called the ‘Digital Ludeme Project’.

When professionals and students move to other countries to either work or study there, they may need recognition of their qualifications. Different instruments and procedures exist depending on the purpose of mobility. Despite the fact that such instruments mainly aim at facilitating mobility, bottlenecks may nonetheless arise in practice. ITEM briefly sets out some exemplary bottlenecks including suggested solutions related to the recognition of qualifications following from their casuistry and research.

De ITEM quick scan maakt een eerste inschatting mogelijk in hoeverre een onderwerp een verdere beoordeling vergt wat mogelijke grenseffecten betreft. ITEM heeft de quick scan toegepast op beleidsvoornemens die in het Nederlandse Regeerakkoord van 2017 worden genoemd. 

Conference on EU Agencies in the Future Europe with livestream!

On Thursday, 7 December 2017 a debate about the role of the European agencies in the future Europe will take place. This event will be organised within the framework of the Europe Calling programme. Hosted by the UM Faculty of Law, the debate will take place at the Bonbonnière in Maastricht. The event will be opened by Ms. Annemarie Penn-te Strake, Mayor of Maastricht. A number of prominent representatives of European Agencies will discuss and share their views with the public.

Op 1 januari 2018 begint de Internationale Rechtshulpkamer (IRK) van de Rechtbank Amsterdam in samenwerking met de Universiteit Maastricht aan een rechtsvergelijkend onderzoek naar Europese aanhoudingsbevelen (EAB’s) die betrekking hebben op personen die niet aanwezig zijn geweest in de procedure die tot hun veroordeling heeft geleid (verstekveroordelingen).  In het Handvest van de grondrechten van de Europese Unie is gegarandeerd dat iedereen recht heeft op een eerlijk proces, waarvan het recht om bij de behandeling van de strafzaak aanwezig te zijn onderdeel uitmaakt.

MCEL member Professor Lisa Waddington made a number of presentations at the annual seminar of the Academic Network of European Disability experts (ANED) held in Brussels on 16 and 17 November. 

Dr. Andrea Ott, Associate professor in EU law and MCEL researcher, taught Chinese students at the master programme in EU and International Law of the China-EU School of Law in Beijing from 6 to 10 November 2017.
