Crossroad
Research theme: Cell Biology and Genetics
Clinical pillar: Stroke

  Crossroad Neuromodulation - Stroke

Experimental research on the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the progression of vascular cognitive impairment and stroke.

Our studies focus on:

  • The impact of cardiovascular risk factors on the neurovascular unit and its interaction with brain immune cells.
  • The detrimental role played by a reactive oxygen-cyclic GMP (Guanosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate) module in the pathophysiology of stroke. We aim to identify markers and targets for an early detection and curative intervention.

Unique contributions and highlights

The inter-disciplinary research of S. Foulquier and R. van Oostenbrugge on Vascular Cognitive Impairment is supported by national and European funding (Dutch Heart Foundation; European Society of Hypertension, European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes; H2020-SVD@target; H2020-CRUCIAL).

The work of A. Casas and H. Schmidt focusses on network medicine, disease module validation, biomarkers and drug repurposing within the context for precision medicine. Their work is supported by national and European funding (Kootstra fellowship; H2020-REPO-TRIAL; H2020-FeatureCloud).
