Sid Penders is helping childcare organisations across Zuid-Limburg to implement healthy practices. As a Health Sciences/Global Health alumnus and PhD candidate, Sid monitors and evaluates a learning network of childcare organisations. The member organisations join forces and learn from each other regarding healthy practices and policies. These best practices are implemented in childcare organisations to benefit the quality of care for children in their earliest development years.

The YUFE Alliance celebrated a significant milestone on Friday, September 20, 2024, with a festive office-warming ceremony at its new Brussels premises. The event was a celebration of the unity and collaboration among YUFE’s 10 partner universities, European Commission representatives, and stakeholders, who came together to honour the alliance’s achievements and look forward to a promising future.

It’s happened every May and June for the last 15 years. Groups of 60 pupils—Year 7 students from primary schools around the region—filing into UM lecture halls to get acquainted with academia. What happens if you break the law? How are new medicines developed? The lectures are pitched in an accessible way, from the doctor’s coats to real-life ambulances. Commemorating three decades of FASoS history.

This year, the total number of students at Maastricht University will probably still increase slightly to more than 23,000. Due to an estimated 3% decrease in the number of new students, this growth will level off. The ratio of Dutch to international students is also stabilising: among the new cohort, the proportion of Dutch students is increasing slightly. A large proportion of students still come from within Maastricht’s Euregion; over 50% of students come from within a 100-kilometre radius of Maastricht.

Professor Rob Bauer, Professor of Finance at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics and holder of the Peter Elverding Chair, is the winner of the Greening Finance Prize 2024. This prestigious prize is awarded by the University of Oxford.

The quality of education for healthcare professionals substantially impacts the future of healthcare. The effects of teaching methods, curriculum development or educational research go beyond the classroom into patient care and health services. To uphold the high level of education, the School  of Health Professions Education (SHE) offers the international Master of Health Professions Education that trains professionals to design, innovate and research educational practices.

New opportunities are opening up at YUFE this academic year for staff members wishing to further their education. A total of 11 courses will be available to research and teaching staff, as well as university administration and management teams. 

In the coming years, the Venlo municipality and Maastricht University (UM) will make additional investments in the city's academic research and education. The goals aim to create future-proof solutions for food and its production while being healthy for people, the environment, and the economy. This relies heavily on technological innovation.

On 28 September 2024, UM Connect Day brought over 200 alumni to Maastricht for networking, a keynote by ASML CFO Roger Dassen, and interactive sessions. The event raised €5,100 for the Equity and Inclusion Programme.
