Programme structure

The part-time programme European Studies for Professionals is aimed at individuals living and/or working in Brussels and the Low Countries, and suitable for those with a previous education in a variety of disciplines across the broad range of social sciences. As such, it allows for both qualitative and quantitative approaches to research.

At the beginning of the programme, PhD candidates are offered a range of courses, taught at ‘Campus Brussels’ which aim at providing basic relevant knowledge and with a focus on research skills. Each PhD project is monitored by a team of two supervisors, of whom at least one is a full professor at Maastricht University. PhD candidates meet regularly to present and discuss draft work and receive feedback from peers and external experts. A part-time PhD would normally be expected to take around 5 years.

In the event that less than 5 PhD candidates are admitted the training programme may be amended and tailor-made to the individual needs of the PhD fellows.

PhD Training
The PhD training programme consists of two components:

Individual supervision
Regular supervision meetings to discuss design and progress of the research project.

Seminar series on theory and methods
Training focuses on research design and qualitative and quantitative research techniques, as well as writing and publication skills.
Lectures by senior scholars and external experts, with discussion of the classic and recent academic literature in political science, international relations and public administration. Access to advanced research training at Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Maastricht University

All collective meetings take place at Campus Brussels on weekdays, once or twice a month, from 17:30 – 19:30 hrs. Occasionally meetings are organised on a Saturday. Individual supervision meetings take place alternately in Brussels and Maastricht, or via Skype or similar communication tools.
