Required documents:

  • a curriculum vitae
  • a letter of motivation, including an indication of how to combine working on a PhD dissertation with a regular job or other activities
  • references
  • transcript of grades/MA diploma

Admissions Procedure

Contact Programme Director and/or potential supervisors with an indication of interest, discuss initial ideas and receive feedback on intended research topics. For more information, read our application guide.

The deadline for applications for 2024/2025 is 31 May 2024.

 After submitting the application the following steps will be taken:

  1. Interviews with prospective PhD candidates at the UM Brussels Campus
  2. Communication of decisions regarding the admission to the PhD programme
  3. Binding acceptance of formal offer and payment of the first instalment of the tuition fee (50% of the first annual fee)
  4. Status as PhD candidate at Maastricht University commences 
  5. Formal PhD supervision and PhD training programme begins

 At the end of the first year: 

  • Submission of a revised and extended research plan
  • Progress review by the Academic Board of the PhD Programme
  • Decision on admission to the second year of the PhD programme

 The applications will be reviewed by the Academic Board at the Department of Political Science. A selection of candidates will be invited for an intake interview to discuss the outline and the planning of the research project. 

At the end of the first year, participants need to submit an elaborated research plan. In order to proceed to the second year, the proposal requires a positive assessment by the supervisors and the Academic Board.

PhD candidates will be subject to the Regulation governing the attainment of doctoral degrees of Maastricht University (read the PhD Regulations of Maastricht University for more information).
