Zijn hoofdtaken worden het Liberal Arts-woord verspreiden in Nederland en in het buitenland en onderzoek doen naar Liberal Arts education in Europese context, maar ook naar de sociale, politieke en educatieve betekenis ervan. We hebben Teun gesproken om een beter beeld te krijgen van zijn nieuwe hoogleraarschap en zijn visie op Liberal Arts en waarom het zo belangrijk is.

    On 1 July 2017, Prof. Teun Dekker became the first Professor in Liberal Arts and Sciences Education in Europe. His main duties will be creating public awareness of Liberal Arts in the Netherlands and abroad, and conducting research on Liberal Arts education in the European context as well as its social, political and educational significance. We met with Prof. Dekker to get a better understanding of his professorship and his vision on what Liberal Arts and Sciences is and why it is important.

    We occasionally receive letters here at Maastricht University telling us we are ruining the Dutch language by only offering education in English. They do not actually have the facts straight: we are a bilingual university with an ‘English unless policy’, which means the language of instruction is English unless there is a good reason for it to be Dutch.
