Rapid rise in use of Uber app Amsterdam

The number of taxi drivers using the Uber app in Amsterdam has grown from 1,298 in January 2016 to 5,217 in December 2019, and the number of trips made has also risen sharply. In December 2019, 8.8 times more trips were made than in January 2016, and the total number of kilometers traveled by drivers over all those trips has more than quadrupled. The gross earnings of drivers per hour averaged € 24.48 in 2019. This is evident from the Factsheet 'Uber Amsterdam: ‘Uber app users, trips made and earnings 2016-2019' from the Research Center for Education and the Labor Market (ROA) of the University of Maastricht.

Time "online" relatively stable

The average time that users spend on the app (time online) is relatively stable over time. “This means,” according to research leader Didier Fouarge, “that the rising customer demand has been met by the increasing number of users of the Uber app”. In 2019, a user of the Uber app was online 24 hours a week. “However”, warns Fouarge, “the differences between drivers are great”. About one in five users is online for 12 hours or less per week and 16% are online for more than 38 per week. Most trips are carried out with Uber X, the regular version of the Uber service. Uber Black, the more luxurious version with better cars and Uber Van, cars that are suitable for larger groups, account for about 7.4% of all trips made in 2019. Within Amsterdam, app activity will be in the Center (on average 28%) and South (on average 24%) most common.

High rating, declining acceptance rate

The average customer rating, measured on a five-point scale, is fairly stable, rising slowly from 4.7 in January 2016 to 4.9 in late 2019. However, the percentage of rides offered on the Uber app that the driver accepts is declining for any service.

Gross earnings

The gross earnings per month differ according to the number of hours online. Anyone who is online 12 hours or less per week earns about € 420 gross (apart from maintenance costs…) per month. If you are online for 32 to 38 hours, you earn an average of € 3,365 gross per month. According to Fouarge, drivers can boost their earnings by spending more hours online: “1 hour online being extra in the week for Uber X is associated with 5% higher earnings in that week. Moreover, drivers can also earn more through a higher acceptance rate”.
