Sinterklaas at UM

In the coming months, the celebrations around Sinterklaas (the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas) will take off again.

This beloved children’s party comes with lots of sweets, poems, events and of course excitement for the kids. There has been much discussion in society about Sinterklaas and his helper ‘Black Piet’ because the racialized depiction of Piet reinforces persistent racial stereotypes in Dutch society. We would like to kindly remind our community of the UM policy that ‘Black Piet’ is not part of Sinterklaas celebrations at UM (offline and online). If you are organising a Sinterklaas event, please make sure this event is inclusive for our diverse community. Have a nice Sinterklaas!
