Inaugural Lecture Prof. Marc de Werd

By

On Friday, 4 December Prof. Marc de Werd, Professor of European Law and judge in the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, gave a lecture on the subject of European justice. The focus was on the day-to-day problems of national judges with the application of European Law. From his personal perspective as a judge in the Amsterdam Court of Appeal Prof. de Werd talked in particular about three problematic issues:

- Fundamental (constitutional) problems of judging in a multi-layered national and international order: How can we give new meaning to important national theories like separation of powers and judicial independence in the European space?
- Practical problems of access to law and the workability of EU Law
- Organizational problems: How can we prepare judges better for their new role in the European legal order?
