The Frits Kalshoven Competition in International Humanitarian Law is an annual event organised by the Netherlands Red Cross and the Flanders Red Cross Belgium for Law students in both countries. Named after one of the world’s most renowned experts in international humanitarian law, the 5-day long competition aims to give students an opportunity to engage in realistic legal simulations of armed conflict situations, thereby taking the law out of the books.

This year’s edition of the Frits Kalshoven moot court competition on International Humanitarian Law was themed “Warfare in densely populated areas”, and involved eight participating teams (from four Dutch universities, three Belgian universities, and the Belgian Military Academy). The final round was judged by Judge Alphons Orie (International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia), Mariya Nikolova (International Committee of the Red Cross), Commodore Peter Heblij (Dutch Ministry of Defence) en Mr. Pieter de Jong Schouwenburg (Van Doorne law firm).
