In February 2019 UM will have a Warm-Sweater-Week!
On 15 February the Dutch Klimaatverbond will organise the national Warm-Sweater-Day (warmetruiendag) to raise awareness for climate change. Together with Green Office Maastricht, Maastricht University has decided to extend the day to a whole week from 11 until 15 February!
How does it work?
All the buildings of UM in the inner city that have centrally regulated heating will take part. During the week, the temperature will drop by one degree over there. In the buildings of FMHL and FPN the temperature will stay the same because of the labs and test persons –and animals present. However, we encourage all staff at Randwyck and at the Venlo campus and the Geleen campus, to manually put the heating in their offices down a bit. That way we can all participate in lowering the UM’s CO2 emissions! So put on your warm sweater during the week of 11 until 15 February. That way you keep yourself warm and the earth cool.
Green Impact Contest!
If you are taking part in the Green Impact programme, you can gain extra points by organizing an ugly or funny sweater contest. Invite your colleagues and nominate the winner!
Why do we do this?
Research from 2016 shows that after the warm-sweater-day, one in five staff members are more aware of their energy use. The sweater can be a symbol for what we can do against climate change on an individual level. Of course you are invited to contribute more by switching of lights and electronic devices when you’re not using them. Moreover, in 2018 the UM saved 1.8 ton CO2 by lowering the temperature by one degree. Therefore, a whole week will save even more! A good working environment is essential for working productively. In winter, it is advised that the average temperature at the office is between 20 and 24 degrees Celsius. The UM strives for having an average temperature of 21 degrees.
