Egyptian documentary maker Ibrahim Nash’at travelled with a camera and an interpreter to Afghanistan in 2021, just days after the U.S. Army withdrew. He came to see in whose hands the country had been left. He gets permission to follow a Taliban commander who has taken over Hollywoodgate, claimed to be a deserted CIA base. The Taliban is in the process of transforming itself from a guerilla movement into a military regime.

Enlightenment stands for universal values such as liberty, equality and solidarity. Whether these values are universal is disputed by some philosophers. However, isn't the public use of reason of great importance in times of fake news and alternative facts? Shouldn't the values of Enlightenment be defended all the more in view of the great lack of freedom, the inequality and the desolidarisation in the world? Philosopher Eva von Redecker proposes a radical new way to look at freedom: what if we conceive freedom as a place where we can stay? Rather than focusing on space, Von Redecker focusses on time. That sounds like a paradox, but in this lecture, she will explain why this new interpretation is better for people and nature, but also for the community because it reduces the distance between individuals. Lasting freedom can only be achieved collectively. And it grows when we share it.

Violist en klimaatcomponist Tim Kliphuis schrijft muziek over de planeet. Om er meer over te leren, besloot hij voor zijn nieuwe stuk Kosmos vijf Nederlandse topwetenschappers te interviewen. In haar boek Limitarisme zet Ingrid Robeyns uiteen dat er een morele vermogensgrens zou moeten zijn aan hoeveel rijkdom iemand mag bezitten. Extreme rijkdom is bijna altijd onverdiend en vaak speelt geluk een rol. Bovendien is deze extreme ongelijkheid niet verenigbaar met ecologische noodzakelijke maatregelen en bedreigt het de democratie: de superrijken (neem Elon Musk) zetten hun rijkdom om in politieke macht.
