The Center for European Studies creates dynamic, interactive programmes with integrated field trips, cultural weekends and study trips to bring you an incredible study abroad experience in Maastricht.
CES programmes are designed for international students who are looking to study abroad on a non-exchange basis. You can choose a short course, a semester or even a full year!

Practical information
Your programme coordinator will guide you through the application process and the preparation for your stay abroad. They will sign you up for classes, arrange housing, organise your introduction programme and be available for any questions.

Mymaastricht
The website mymaastricht.nl offers a wide range of useful information on finances, health, housing, and transport to simplify everyday life for international people. It also features an extensive city map that helps you find your way around Maastricht, including UM buildings, cultural venues, sports facilities, scenic spots, supermarkets, places to eat, and much more.
Visit Maastricht
If you want to explore Maastricht in your free time, visitmaastricht.com is a great place to start. From restaurants and cafés to museums, cultural sites, and guided tours, the website offers plenty of inspiration and helps you discover Maastricht beyond campus. You can also explore the events calendar to find out about festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and other activities taking place in and around the city.
Getting to Maastricht
If you are unable to join our pick-up service or it is not included in your programme, you can easily take a train, bus or shuttle to Maastricht.
Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam)
Train: check out journey advice and time tables before travelling to Maastricht.
Bus: you can take a FlixBus from Amsterdam Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Bijlmer to Maastricht.
Brussels Airport (Belgium)
Train: plan your transit to Maastricht via Belgian Railways.
Bus: FlixBus offers a fast and easy connection from Brussels Airport to Maastricht.
Shuttle: direct door-to-door service is available via, for example, Taxi Patrick.
Housing
Making a reservation
Housing reservations and payments go through CES. On the application form you can fill out your housing preferences.
Guesthouse facilities
Wi-Fi access is available throughout the Guesthouse. There are free laundry facilities, as well as tennis and basketball courts and equipment. You can also borrow a bicycle pump, vacuum cleaner, iron, and tools. The Guesthouse provides your mattress, cover sheets, pillow, pillow case, blanket and blanket cover. You will need to provide your own towels.
Room types
Rooms in the P-building have a private kitchen and rooms in the C-building have communal cooking facilities; in both buildings the bathroom facilities are shared.
Insurance
Students need sufficient health care, liability and travel insurance for the duration of their stay. Most students are covered through their home university. More information about student insurance can be found here.
Transport
We highly recommend getting a bike during your time abroad. It is one of the best ways to integrate into Dutch life, explore with ease and make it to class on time! One of the easiest ways is to rent a bike via Swapfiets.

Visa & residence permit
If you are studying for more than 90 days at Maastricht University your CES coordinator will apply for your visa or resident permit for you.
If you are a US or Australian citizen you are able to stay in the Netherlands for up to 90 days without a visa.
You can find out if you need a visa by answering a few questions on the website of the Government of the Netherlands.
