Internationaal en Europees Recht

Welcome to the department of International and European Law

The Department is the scholarly home of International and European law at the University of Maastricht. It has become a key academic player worldwide over the years, due to the top quality of its teaching and research outputs. Its work is focused on the areas of European Union law, public international law, international economic law, and international relations, which play a prominent place in the Law Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.

The Department offers a wide and comprehensive range of courses, both at undergraduate and graduate level, including moot court trainings, and summer schools. The courses are taught in English or in Dutch and this bilingual teaching is an added value to our degrees. As part of their studies, students are also offered the possibility of an internship.

Researchers participate actively in faculty and interfaculty Research Centres and Institutes, mainly MCELMCfHRCERiMIGIR and MACIMIDE, and in many disciplinary and interdisciplinary research networks, both national and international. The Department has in fact developed an extensive collection of links with partner institutions around the globe. These relationships provide for the exchange of students and staff between Maastricht and other leading institutions, and also offer opportunities to share knowledge, develop understanding and enrich the research and academic life of the Faculty as a whole.

The Department provides facilities for visiting researchers from around the world to further their own research. While in Maastricht, they meet with other scholars in the field and gain encouragement and direction from the many distinguished international and European lawyers associated with the Department and University. Visiting scholars are encouraged to participate fully in the activities of the Department and the Research Centres.

The Department is committed to the advancement of scholarship in international and European law through research, documentation, dialogue, and publication. Regular programmes of lectures and seminars are run by its associated research centers on topical issues featuring leading academics and practitioners.
