Joost Wijffels (The Netherlands), University College Maastricht
I love the international environment that allows me to acquaint myself with different cultures, and I think the program is very strong.

Extra-curricular alongside UCM
My name is Joost, I am nineteen years old and come from the Netherlands. Aside from studying at UCM, I am also the Secretary of the Social Board, which arranges the social extracurricular activities at UCM and form a part of the Board of the Student Association UCMSA Universalis. Although studying and being on the Board can take up quite some time, I have many other hobbies! I love cooking and hanging out with my friends, or going to parties and museums. I also love reading, writing and cinematography.

Personalised study programme
When I first came to UCM, I wanted to do History, Philosophy, and International Relations. Now, because of the chances to really explore my interests, I focus much more on Philosophy, Sociology, Cultural and Diversity Studies. I feel like I have discovered my own path. I choose a Social Sciences/Humanities concentration because my academic interests simply did not fit merely one of them.

Summer in Maastricht
The best part about student life, however, is spring and summer. When the days get warmer and the sun shines brighter, we like to go to various parks in and around the city, or go to Sint-Pietersberg. It is wonderful to be surrounded by nature and friends and watch the sunset from the hills of Maastricht. Student life and academics can be very busy, and being in nature is one of my favourite ways to relax.

After UCM
I am not entirely sure what I want to do after graduating from UCM. I might immediately dive into a Master’s degree, probably a Research Master’s in Philosophy. Ideally, I would do that in Uppsala or in Leuven. I am very happy with and grateful for my time at UCM. As cheesy as it sounds, I truly have had the opportunity to develop myself here, academically but also socially and personally. I still have quite some time to go here, but I am sure I will miss this place a lot when I graduate!

I think the community is what makes UCM so special. You always feel like you are studying with a big family around you, ready to support you when you are in need, but also ready to share the most incredible experiences with you.

I have always found the student community at UCM to be very welcoming. Whether it’s having a chat with a student while I wait for some tea or asking for help in a course, everyone is approachable and friendly.

I remember my first impression of UCM – I came into the building and was greeted by the staff. The common room was filled with students speaking several languages while someone played guitar in the background – it felt like a scene from a movie.

The most valuable thing I’ve learned during UCM is that 'it isn’t always that deep'. Sometimes you need to let go of your extreme concernedness about certain things...
