“I was looking for a concise 1-year English-taught master’s programme with a strong leadership component, that could serve as a stepping stone towards a PhD, in a very international city where I could socially interact in both English and Dutch. I needed to look no further than Maastricht!
I did my bachelor’s in Biology in Costa Rica, focussing on Ecology and Sustainable Development, followed by a master’s programme in Environmental Management. It made me realise during the many field trips we made, that if you want plans for conservation to succeed you need to interact with the local communities. This also triggered my interest in leadership. My personal focus shifted from 'saving the rain forest' towards interacting with communities. I became very passionate about contributing to the greater good and started to cherish a career as a researcher in an international academic environment.
In the meantime I had married a Belgian guy and moved to Genk in Belgium where we’re living now. In these times of globalisation, you need to be able to understand the academic atmosphere outside your own region. That’s what put me on the path of this particular master’s programme in Governance and Leadership in European Public Health.
After this master’s programme I would like to do a PhD. In this way I can apply everything I’ve learned and develop long-term projects that really benefit the greater good. Whether in cultural diversity, sexual education or health issues for women or the LGBT community, I don’t know yet.
Maastricht inspires me, it’s a beautiful, historic town with a vibrant international and academic atmosphere. I feel blessed that this is the place where I can work towards making my dreams come true.”
