Maastricht University (UM) attaches great importance to employability and mobility improvement of its staff. It is essential that staff be offered opportunities to further develop themselves professionally and capitalise on their competences where possible.
UM is keen to invest in its staff given that it, too, benefits from their development and knowledge.
UM encourages its employees to participate in training, and supports them in doing so. The support provided by UM varies depending on the course, its purpose and its costs. Facilities for training essential for performing or continuing to perform your present duties will be supported by the UM rather than for training that is not fully essential. The size of the available budgets can also play a role.
The finally offered facilities will be determined between the employee and the manager.
The training advisor at the Staff Development Centre (SDC) can offer support and counselling services to help with the development of your generic competences (UFO).

Refund obligations training costs
In organisations in both the public and private sector, it is typical to require staff who benefit from training to pay back the costs of that training if the employment contract is dissolved soon afterwards
Employees are obliged to reimburse UM for educational costs if:
- they end their programme prematurely
- their employment at UM is terminated during the programme by dismissal on his or her request or self-inflicted
- their employment at UM is terminated within three years after completing the programme by dismissal on his or her request or self-inflicted.
The reimbursement amount will be reduced by 1/36 each month following the end of the programme. Employees will be exempt from reimbursement if the reimbursement amount is less than €2,000 on the day that their employment at UM is terminated. This means that the reimbursement obligation mostly applies to more expensive programmes. Exemption may also be granted in exceptional cases.
Employees will be required to pay back the following costs as initially covered by UM or reimbursed to the employee:
- course registration and tuition fees
- travel and accommodation costs
- books and other study materials.
For courses that consist of separate modules, this regulation applies per module.
Staff who leave UM take with them the knowledge they have acquired. Not infrequently, the training UM employees receive plays a major role in their being hired by a new employer. Many employers are prepared to cover these costs for employees they are hiring.
Prior to their course, employees are required to fill in the application form for study costs. This form states whether and which costs must be repaid if the employment contract is dissolved within a given period.
