Behavioral Science and Food System Transitions

Food is an essential part of our lives and is of fundamental importance for our health and well-being. However, the way we currently manage food (production, consumption, disposal) contributes to problems such as environmental pollution, climate change, and chronic disease.

What is needed is a ‘food system transition’ – a shift towards sustainable production, distribution, and consumption of food for a more resilient future planet. The food systems transition requires technological advances and innovations. But these will have little impact if consumers reject such innovations.

This theme focuses on understanding and shaping consumer acceptance of more sustainable food practices and products.”
