Ethics review

Ethical review of scientific research involving either human participants or personally identifiable data is done by several ethical review committees within the university. For studies that fall under the Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act (WMO)   (in Dutch), review by the accredited review committee METC (Medisch Ethische Toetsingscommissie)   (in Dutch) is mandatory. Medical scientific research conducted at FHML which does not fall under the WMO must also be submitted to the METC. In case you are in doubt whether your research falls under the WMO, please consult the METC.

For other types of scientific studies, ethics review is done by the relevant ethics committee:
To Ethics Review Committee Inner City faculties (ERCIC)
To Ethics Review Committee Psychology and Neuroscience (ERCPN)
To Ethics Review Committee Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML-REC)

UM-REC is the apex of the ethics review system at Maastricht University for non-WMO research.

Reviews are conducted using the assessment criteria and guidelines laid down in the Code of Ethics for research in the Social and Behavioural Sciences involving human subjects

The Medical Research Involving Human Subjects Act and the Code of Ethics for research in the Social and Behavioural Sciences involving human subjects are in compliance with the overarching UM Integrity Code of Conduct.
