SBE institutes
Limburg Institute of Financial Economics (LIFE)
Associated with the departments of Finance, Monetary Economics and Econometrics at Maastricht University, LIFE’s research focuses on financial economics. Research topics covered include: exchange rates, microstructure, real estate and corporate bonds, pension funds, term-structure modelling, overreaction in stock markets, tail estimation, corporate governance, financial fragility and mortgage pricing.
Maastricht Academic Centre for Research in Services (MAXX)
An initiative of the Department of Marketing, MAXX focuses on service excellence to increase market share and bottom line. Services marketing is growing in importance and is now a major area of research. Through MAXX, leading specialists in services marketing working in other (international) centres of academic excellence can share their knowledge. Companies and other organisations can then use this expertise to make managerial and policy decisions.

Maastricht Accounting and Audit Research Centre (MARC)
MARC was founded in 1992 as an audit research institute. It extended its focus to financial and managerial accounting research, as well as postgraduate educational activities. After the establishment of a separate department at the SBE dedicated to postgraduate education in 2002, MARC’s educational activities moved, allowing the institute to focus on research. Since 2000, MARC has also been carrying out research in information management.

Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA)
An independent organisation within the SBE, ROA’s research focuses on the correlation between education and the labour market. Its aim is to contribute to both academic and societal discussions on:
- the effects of knowledge and skills acquired in educational situations on occupational careers
- performance within organisations
- the development of the economy
KAANS research group
The KAANS research group focusses on school careers of youngsters in Limburg. A multidisciplinary team monitors ongoing cohorts from preschool up into secondary education. Tens of thousands of youngsters, their parents and teachers in the Limburg region participate. The research program serves a combined package of objectives: on the one hand regional support for educational quality and equal opportunities and on the other hand the broad quest for deeper insights in the processes behind school success and achievement.
Joint Institutes
European Centre for Corporate Engagement (ECCE)
A joint initiative of Maastricht University and RSM Erasmus University in Rotterdam, ECCE is an international research consortium focused on corporate engagement and sustainable finance. Supported by leading investment institutes, its mission is to develop, communicate and promote thought-provoking and innovative research into business and finance in order to promote sustainable development.
Social Innovation for Competitiveness, Organisational Performance and Human Excellence (INSCOPE)
A joint initiative between Maastricht University and the NSI, INSCOPE focuses on the study of social innovation and its effect on competitiveness, organisational performance and human excellence. Research has shown that social innovation and its leverage of technological innovation are crucial to the performance and competitiveness of companies.
Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT)
UNU-MERIT is a joint research and training centre of the United Nations University (UNU) and Maastricht University. It was created in 2006 following the integration of the former UNU-Institute for New Technologies (INTECH) and the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology, MERIT. The centre focuses on the social, political and economic factors that drive technological change and innovation.
