Assistant Professor in Data Science

The Institute of Data Science (IDS) at Maastricht University in the Netherlands invites applications for an Assistant Professorship in Data Science.

Job description
The successful candidate will demonstrate a cutting-edge research programme in any of artificial intelligence, deep learning, or a related field. The candidate will lead multidisciplinary research teams, participate in teaching in educational programmes, and pursue strategies to translate research results into innovation. We are looking for independent researchers who will seek out and lead local, regional and international collaborations.  We welcome applicants whose research has led to, or has the potential to lead to real-world applications and/or strong collaborations with industry.

Requirements
Applicants should fulfill the following main requirements:

  • PhD degree in data science, artificial intelligence, computer science, mathematics, or a related field;
  • At least 2 years of experience in an academic environment after the PhD period;
  • Excellence in research and a track record of obtaining research funding;
  • Experience and excellence in teaching;
  • Experience in supervising Bachelor, Masters, or PhD students;
  • Good programming skills (e.g. Phyton, R, Java);
  • A personality characterized by vision, ambition, and collaboration;
  • Fluency in the English language.

Conditions of employment
The salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience in line with the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities (expected minimum € 3475 and maximum € 5405) for a ful-time job (38 hours/week). On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and 8.3% year-end allowance. Postdoctoral Fellow

The Institute of Data Science (IDS) at Maastricht University in the Netherlands invites applications for a postdoctoral position.

The postdoctoral fellow will perform cutting-edge research in methods and applications related to data science. The postdoc will specifically focus on research in support of the FAIR principles to establish an Internet of FAIR resources that are maximally Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reproducible. In the short term, the postdoc will develop different metrics and a framework to assess the FAIRness of digital resources. In the long term, the postdoc will be involved in FAIR-focused research projects and grant writing. We are looking for independent researchers who will pursue research and teaching in an intellectually vibrant and multi-disciplinary environment.

Requirements

  • PhD in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, or equivalent
  • Excellent scientific background and strong publication record

Data Science Developer

Job description

  • Work with other developers and data scientists to code proof-of-concept projects on large scale data sets.
  • Develop data processing and system integration applications.
  • Construct web based user interfaces and visualizations.
  • Document design decisions, code, and workflows.
  • Migrate successful proof-of-concept projects into production environments.
  • Quickly ingest new technologies to consider applicability to current or future needs.
  • Utilize statistics and predictive analytics to create innovative solutions to business problems.
  • Analyze business requirements as they relate to the ETL process; research, evaluate, and recommend alternative solutions.
  • Design, develop, and test ETL applications consistent with application architecture guidelines.
  • Participate in an agile-based approach implementing data services and solutions to deliver value rapidly
  • Implement a process to collect and maintain inventory of digital assets across the enterprise
  • Implement ETL processes, including data acquisition, data integration, data quality testing, data indexing and query answering.
  • Develop innovative data management, with real-time and predictive analytic capabilities
  • Advise researchers in the preparation and execution of their research data management plans
  • Collaborate with IT colleagues from Maastricht University and Maastricht University Medical Center

Requirements
Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years’ experience of IT platform development
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • High quality standards
  • Bring a versatile toolbox with you. Know how to select and apply the best and most efficient tool for the job ahead (UML & ER diagrams, Epics, User Stories, UI Mockups, automated Unit and User Acceptance testing)
  • Experience with Continuous Delivery (Bug Tracker, SCM, automated Test and Build tools)
  • Understanding of database and analytical technologies (RDBMS, NoSQL storage, triple stores, SQL, SPARQL/Cypher/Gremlin)
  • Understanding of Big Data technologies (Hadoop, Spark)
  • Knowledge of one of those programming languages R (Shiny), Python (SciPy), Java, NodeJS, HTML5, JavaScript and CSS
  • Knowledge of semantic technologies (RDF, OWL, SPARQL, etc)
  • Proven experience in collaborative multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Participation in implementing large-scale global data warehousing and analytics projects
  • Participation in open source projects (reporting bugs, proposing features and ideas and constructive criticism, providing bug-fixes and new implementations)
  • Ability to apply the right database, data warehousing or data sciences technology for the right job
  • Implementation and tuning experience using cloud computing platforms and frameworks
