Maja Brkan (M.)
Maja Brkan is Associate Professor of EU law at the Faculty of law of Maastricht University. From 2017-2020, she held the position of Associate Director of the Maastricht Centre for European Law.
She graduated in 2003 with distinction from University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) and obtained an LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 2004. In 2007, she was awarded a PhD in EU law from University of Ljubljana. She also holds a prestigious Diploma of the Academy of European Law. Before moving to Maastricht, she worked as a legal advisor (référéndaire) at the Court of justice of the EU (2007-2013). In 2007, the Slovenian Union of Lawyers’ Associations awarded her the prize ‘Young lawyer of the year’.
EU law has been at the centre of Maja Brkan's academic interests already since her student years. Her current research interests comprise the interplay between EU fundamental rights and technology, the fields of data protection and protection of privacy in an electronic environment as well as the impact of artificial intelligence on the society. Her research approach seeks to analyse these fields from the perspective of EU fundamental rights as well as from the point of view of the interplay with other fields, such as private international law and consumer protection law in the EU. Her broader research interests include also EU constitutional law, EU competition law and EU procedural law. She published in reputed journals specialising in these topics and presented her work on conferences in Europe and USA.
In addition, she is a co-author of the monograph ‘Pravo EU: Ustavno, procesno in gospodarsko pravo EU’ (‘EU Law: Constitutional, Procedural and Commercial EU Law’), which is one of the core textbooks on EU law in Slovenian language. She is also an editor of two edited volumes in the field of EU law and an author of a monograph on EU external relations.
Maja Brkan is a scholar of the Maastricht Centre for European Law and a member of the Ius Commune Research School. She is also a member of several professional associations as well as a fellow of the European Law Institute.
She is currently coordinating the Privacy course. Previously, she was a coordinator for the course ‘The Law of European Institutions’ at the University College Maastricht as well as for ‘European Union Law: Foundations’ at Maastricht University and Hasselt University. As a tutor, she also taught the courses ‘Advanced European Law’, ‘European competition law’, ‘EU external relations law’ and ‘Law of the internal market’. In academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15, she coached students for the European Law Moot Court competition where the students achieved first and second places respectively.
As a visiting lecturer and visiting researcher, Maja Brkan visited numerous renowned universities in Europe, USA and China, such as University of California – Berkeley, Yale University, Autonomous University of Barcelona and Beijing Normal University.
In addition to Slovenian, she speaks English, French, German and Dutch.
