When two passionate minds meet, great things can happen. A few months ago during a Maastricht Social Run, Human Movement Sciences student Lucas ran across Juan, an alumnus of Governance and Leadership in European Public Health. A conversation about training for the IRONMAN® European Championship and working for the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation led to a partnership to help raise international awareness of tuberculosis, one of the deadliest infectious global diseases.

From Monday 19 until Thursday 22 August students will get to know each other and the city of Maastricht.  This week is about getting to know Maastricht, the city where you will meet new people and you will have to learn to find your way around again. Not just at the faculty, the library and the sports centre, but also the student and study associations and the area in and around Maastricht.

In the upcoming months, we’ll share tips on Instagram for our students on how to live a healthier life. Not just a random collection, but tips based on actual research happening at our faculty. The brains behind this idea are Lieve Vonken and Gido Metz, PhD candidates at CAPHRI, the Care and Public Health Research Institute and researchers at the Department of Health Promotion.

To still work out unexpected discoveries, seven projects are now receiving a small top-up of up to 30,000 euros per project thanks to NWO's Impact Explorer call. Elia Formisano of Maastricht University is one of the lucky ones.

Over the last few weeks, the world has been holding its breath watching the unfolding drama of the US presidential race, which led to President Joe Biden withdrawing his candidacy and endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris. As recent poll conducted by the New York Times shows that Harris has narrowed the gap that was growing between Biden and the Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Living in Sittard and studying in Maastricht, Eindhoven or even Tilburg or Leiden. A few years ago, this was hard to imagine, but nowadays it is increasingly common. Sometimes out of necessity, but often also as a conscious choice. The rise of more creative places to live outside the traditional student cities makes it more attractive for students to broaden their search for a nice place to live. PITground, behind the railway station in Sittard, is one such place.

“Do you make lists too?” This was one of the first questions that professor of Financial Services Lisa Brüggen asked PhD candidate Jenna Barrett. Her affirmative reply sealed the deal. An inspiring and fruitful partnership ensued, resulting in Barrett’s dissertation ‘Money matters: Understanding and improving financial wellbeing.’ “My research provides new insights into how you can define, measure and improve financial wellbeing.”
