    Integration of Maastricht School of Management into Maastricht University

    The Maastricht School of Management (MSM) and Maastricht University (UM) are complementary institutions that have the potential to strengthen one another. Therefore, the boards of both organisations signed an agreement on 20 May 2022, integrating MSM into the School of Business and Economics (SBE), one of UM's six faculties.

    Large-scale study on cuts in numbers of tobacco outlets in the Netherlands

    The Dutch government has pledged to cut the number of tobacco points of sale and thus reduce the visibility of tobacco in society. From 2024, supermarkets will no longer be allowed to sell tobacco. This week will see the start of a large-scale study over four years on the implementation and effects of the new legislation.

    UM to coordinate nationwide research project to unravel skin diseases

    The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has, within the framework of Research along Routes by Consortia (NWA-ORC), awarded the research project Next Generation Immuno-Dermatology (NGID) with a prestigious grant of 11.7 million Euro. NGID is a nationwide, large-scale project to unravel novel biomarkers for six different skin diseases, coordinated by Maastricht University.

    Patients with schizophrenia hardly represented in antipsychotic drug studies

    No less than 80 per cent of patients who are prone to psychosis are left out of clinical studies on the effectiveness of antipsychotics. These drug studies apply strict exclusion criteria, which means that only the least ill patients participate, such as those who are susceptible to psychosis, but who do not suffer from addiction, physical illnesses or suicidal thoughts.

    Green light for LIME 2.0 care innovation programme

    The Province of Limburg has awarded a second tranche of subsidy of 2,040,000 euros to the 'Kennis-As' project LIME (LImburg MEet). LIME has proven itself in recent years as an accessible and interdisciplinary knowledge center and innovation platform for healthcare.

    Tobacco discouragement is only effective from €12 per cigarette pack

    The only way to get enough people to quit smoking to achieve the goals of the National Prevention Agreement is to substantially increase the excise duty on tobacco products. This is the conclusion of research by Maastricht University (UM) on the price sensitivity of people who smoke cigarettes or rolling tobacco.

    Working from home will disadvantage cross-border workers unless rules are changed

    Unless the EU rules and tax treaties are amended, some cross-border workers will soon have to pay tax in two countries: in their country of residence for hours spent working from home, and in the country in which they work for hours spent in the office. Since COVID-19 has made working from home often no longer a choice, the Dutch, German and Belgian governments have exempted cross-border workers from the usual rules until the end of 2021. But no such arrangements have been made for 2022.
