High School Summer College

As a consequence of the COVID-19 the university has decided to cancel the High School Summer College!

Would you like to study a few days at Maastricht University during summer? And are you looking for a new challenge in addition to your school work?
Then you might be interested in our High School Summer College: an English-language programme for ambitious and talented high school students. This High School Summer College is a one-week course is designed as a primer on the ‘Problem Based Learning’ method and the content of study programmes that Maastricht University offers.

Themes like war, war crimes and refugees are, unfortunately, not something from history. In this summer college, we will study the presence of the past, and more specifically, but not exclusively World War II, to understand and address these themes within the light of today. We chose the quote of William Faulkner “The past is never dead. It's not even past” as the connecting theme.
More specifically, we will use current insights from sociology, economics, politics, genetics, psychology and law to understand often war and war-related issues, like refugees, racism, populism, crime and poverty.

I learnt a lot about myself and the others as well as what I'd like to study

Are people evil or made evil? Is a society per definition violent? How important are the personalities of the leaders? What is the impact of your nationality? Are we up to designing our children? These and many more questions you will discuss and investigate during the High School Summer College. You will learn about scientific research and how to design, perform and report a small research project. You can choose a research project from two topics, either involving psychology or genetics.

At the last meeting, you will present the results of your project and you will receive a certificate.

I've improved my critical thinking, learnt how to properly listen to others, better respond to debates, to be more confident about my opinions and finally to making connections between different subjects. The course made me realize that I need to listen or read more about world events/politics/wars..., etcetera.
