Input request for strategic programme

Staff and students are invited to contribute to Maastricht University’s Strategic Programme 2017 – 2021. The new Strategic Programme will be presented at the opening of the Academic Year on Monday, 5 September 2016.

Important themes featured in the programme will be, amongst others, education, research, internationalisation and societal engagement. During the upcoming weeks, four think tanks will gather input related to these themes. The think tanks have been appointed by the Executive Board. The members are a balanced representation of all faculties and the University Council. In addition to this, two so-called ‘Town Hall meetings’ will be organised in March during which staff and students will have the opportunity to discuss with the Executive Board and the think tanks.

The think tank members and their topics are:

1. Education: Rolf van der Velden (ROA/SBE), Christiaan van den Berg (OCW), Mien Segers (SBE), Teun Dekker (UCM/FHS), Walter Jansen (EdLab), Tom Smeets (FPN), Olav de Wit (student), Dirk Tempelaar (SBE), Ricarda von Kleist-Retzow (student).

Topics: what do our four key characteristics (European, innovative, responsible and sustainable) mean for our educational philosophy? What is our vision on PBL and how do we use existing advice and ideas to implement improvements?

Support: Nieke Guillory (AA)

2. Research: Ron Heeren (FHS/FHML), Bert Kip (Chemelot Campus), Jaap Bos (SBE), Ellen Vos (Law), Anita Jansen (FPN), Tamar Sharon (FASoS), Blanche Schroen (FHML), Dirk Tempelaar (SBE), Maarten van Wesel (University Library), Michael Dijkstra (student), Mark Spigt (FHML).

This think tank examines the relation between the broad research themes and focused topics within faculties, what organisational and strategic aspects ensure sustainable research funding including external (3rd party) funding, and how the relationship between research and education can be managed within study programmes.

Support: Daniela Trani (AA) & Bakir Bulic (FHML)

3. Internationalisation: Peter Schröder (FHML), Nadine Burquel (European Foundation for Management Development), Michael Geary (FASoS), Sjoerd Claessens (Law), Melissa Siegel (Governance), Mark Vluggen (SBE), Chris Leonards (FASoS), Han Aarts (Mundo), Franca Feisel (student), Mark Govers (FHML), Marlou Kerssens (student).

This think tank reflects upon the constitution of a truly European university with a global component and, taking this profile into account, the activities this requires in the upcoming years.

Support: Alexandra Rosenbach (AA)

4. Societal engagement: Saskia Klosse (Law), Leo Penta (German Institute for Community Building), Pascal Breuls (SSC), Andries de Grip (ROA/SBE), Petra Körmendy (INBETWEEN), Tim van Wanroij (Maastricht-LAB), Roberta Haar (UCM/FHS), Chris Leonards (FASoS), Rik Krouwel (student).

Specific questions tackled by this think tank are: what is our specific role in society (locally, (Eu)regionally, globally). What is needed to develop Maastricht further as a university city and how can we increase the involvement of our alumni?

Support: Niels Harteman (Griffie)
