Full course description
This course will follow the evolution of economic ideas and experience from the ancient civilizations to the twentieth century. The slave system of the ancient world, the feudal system of the Middle Ages, the mercantilist system and the Industrial Revolution will be examined. Special attention will be given to the role of the Dutch in economic development in the 1600s. Readings will include the works of Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes. Our main text will be Robert Heilbroner’s The Worldly Philosophers.Recommended reading
