This course is specific to the MSc track and provides an insight to the theory and practice of of drafting and interpreting patent claims. Students will be offered an insight into the translation of technical specifications in a patent application and the tools to draft a patent application that offers the inventor maximal patent protection for his invention within the framework of the European Patent Convention and in the context of preparation for the European Qualifying Exam. At the end of this course, the student is conversant with issues concerning claim categories, disclosure and clarity of patent claims, as well as the influence of prior art on the patentability of claims, the interpretation of claims and infringement. The students learn to draft patent claims after assessing the invention and the prior art while taking into account novelty, inventive step and clarity. The students learn to use the problem-solution approach.
