English Language and European Culture
Full course description
The course ‘English language and European culture’ aims to help you activate your communication skills in English and to provide a linguistic framework in which the diversity of European culture can be considered, and interest in the European continent can be stimulated. It is linked to your parallel course, European Culture: History & Art.
The course highlights communication focusing on speaking and active listening skills as well as writing. Grammar and pronunciation will be addressed if they interfere with your expressing your meaning clearly.
The course has five major focuses:
1. English in Use
2. European Languages
3. European Minorities
4. European expressions of culture
5. Europe’s developmental aid
You will each choose a European country that interests you. This country will be the basis of your study. You will form study teams and, within your team, compare and contrast the above-mentioned topics in your chosen countries.
This course consists of 28 class hours divided over 4 weeks. Students earn 3 ECTS credits when they obtain a passing grade.
This is a content-integrated language course in which you will increase your English language skills while studying European culture. The course aims to build on your existing knowledge of the English language by stimulating you to use it actively and interactively in group discussions, individual and group presentations and writing. As the course progresses, you will feel increasingly comfortable and free to use the language spontaneously. You will gain a deeper understanding of different aspects of European culture, most notably the continent’s rich diversity in terms of languages, minorities, and expressions of culture as well as its relationship to the developing world. At the end of this course you will be able to better appreciate and critically evaluate new information about Europe. You will have the opportunity to showcase what you have learned in your final presentation.
